The only limb of the Cinque Ports outside Kent and Sussex, Brightlingsea was attached to Sandwich, and the link survives ceremonially through the town's Deputy of the Cinque Ports.
Its economy was oysters, smacks and shipbuilding, and it remains a serious sailing town: Colne Yacht Club, the harbour and boatyards, and marine trades from riggers to chandlers.
There is only one road in and out of the town, which makes it unusually self-contained for its size, the High Street and Victoria Place carry a full range of independents (delis, bakery, greengrocer, florists, jewellers, gift shops) that a comparable town on a through-route would have lost.
Brightlingsea had a recorded population of about 8,680 at the 2021 census.
